A woman in a wheelchair is looking for a new dermatologist. She opens Google Maps, types the search, and gets three listings side by side. All three have decent reviews. Two of them tell her nothing about whether she can actually get in the front door. The third has a small line that says wheelchair accessible entrance. Guess who she calls.
That line is a Google Business Profile attribute. It is free, it took someone a few seconds to turn on, and it just won a patient before a single review was read. Attributes are one of the most underused tools in local search for medical practices, and the reason is simple: almost nobody knows they are there. So let us fix that.
What Google Business Profile attributes actually are
Your Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows up when someone searches your name or a phrase like dermatologist near me. Most owners fill in the hours, the phone number, and a few photos, then stop. But under the hood, Google offers a set of short factual tags you can add called attributes. They come in a few buckets:
- Accessibility: wheelchair accessible entrance, restroom, parking, and seating.
- Service options: online care or telehealth, appointments required, same day availability, and onsite services.
- Health and safety: things like mask requirements when they apply.
- Languages: the languages your staff can actually speak with a patient.
- Identity: women owned, veteran owned, LGBTQ friendly, and similar tags that Google has rolled out over the past few years.
These tags do two jobs at once. They appear right on your listing so a patient can read them at a glance, and Google uses several of them as filters, so a patient can narrow the map to only the places that fit. Google explains the full set in its Business Profile help center. The tags you can add depend on your business category, so a dental office and a physical therapy clinic will see slightly different options.
Why a boring little tag changes who books you
Patients do not choose a doctor the way they choose a restaurant. There is worry baked into the decision. Can I get through the door. Will they understand me. Do I have to come in, or can we start online. Every attribute you turn on answers one of those worries before the patient has to work up the nerve to call and ask.
Think about languages. Roughly one in five people in the United States speaks a language other than English at home, per the US Census Bureau. If your front desk has someone who speaks Spanish and your listing does not say so, you are invisible to a huge pool of neighbors who are searching in Spanish and picking the practice that told them up front. We went deeper on that specific miss in reaching Spanish speaking patients, and the languages attribute is the fastest first step.
Or think about the patient who can only be seen after work and does not want to drive across town for a first visit. The online care attribute tells them they can start with you tonight. The patient who is anxious about walking in without an appointment sees appointments required and relaxes. None of this is flashy. All of it removes a reason to keep scrolling.
The rule of thumb: answer the question before they ask it
Every attribute is really a patient question in disguise. Wheelchair accessible entrance answers can I get in. Languages spoken answers will they understand me. Online care answers do I have to come in today. Appointments required answers can I just walk in. Fill in the ones that are true, and your listing does the reassuring for you, day and night, without anyone on staff lifting a finger.
Identity attributes: small badges, real belonging
Over the past few years Google has added identity attributes such as women owned, veteran owned, and LGBTQ friendly, with more categories along the way. They show as a small badge on your listing. They are optional, and you should only ever use the ones that are genuinely true. But when they are true, they matter more than they look.
A veteran looking for a mental health provider who gets military life. A new mom who would rather see a woman owned practice. A patient who wants to know a clinic is a safe, welcoming place for them. These badges are a two second signal that says you belong here, and the patients they speak to notice them and choose by them. Most practices that qualify never switch them on, which means the ones that do stand out for free.
Attributes and getting found, not just chosen
There is a search side to this too. A complete, detailed profile is something Google rewards. Google states plainly that businesses with complete and accurate information are easier to match to the right searches, and that complete listings look more reputable to people, which earns more clicks. Attributes are a big part of what complete means for a healthcare listing.
They also plug you into more specific searches and filters. When a patient filters Maps for wheelchair accessible, or searches for a Spanish speaking pediatrician, the listings with those attributes are the ones in the running. A bare listing simply is not eligible for that match. If you want the full picture of how practices climb the local results, we broke it down in how to rank in the Google map pack, and a well built profile is where it always starts. This is the daily blocking and tackling of healthcare SEO, the free groundwork that ads can never replace.
How to set your attributes in ten minutes
You do not need a specialist for this. Here is the whole job:
- Sign in and find your profile. Search your practice name on Google while signed in to the Google account that manages the listing. Your profile tools appear at the top.
- Open Edit profile. Look for the About or More section. That is where the attribute groups live: accessibility, service options, health and safety, and identity.
- Check what is honestly true. Wheelchair access, parking, languages your staff really speaks, online care if you offer it, appointment rules, and any identity tags that fit. Leave the rest blank. Never claim one that is not true, because patients will feel the gap on the first visit.
- Save and check on your phone. Look at your listing the way a patient does, on a phone, and make sure the tags read clearly.
- Revisit every quarter. Practices change. You add a language, start telehealth, move to a bigger space with better access. A few attributes come from patient feedback too, so a quarterly look keeps everything honest and current.
While you are in there, one more thing worth a minute: make sure the details on your profile match the details on your website exactly. Mismatched hours, phone numbers, or services across the web hurt both trust and ranking, a problem we covered in does your practice info match everywhere online. Your listing and your website should tell the same story.
Where EtherealMinds fits in
Attributes are a perfect example of what we believe about growth: the boring, free, foundational things usually beat the expensive, flashy ones. A practice does not need a bigger ad budget to fix a listing that is only half filled in. It needs someone to actually go do the unglamorous work, and to keep it accurate as the practice grows.
That is a slice of what we handle for the healthcare practices we work with. We build and maintain the Google Business Profile, keep the attributes, hours, photos, and services honest and complete, line them up with a fast website that converts, and connect the whole thing to a patient acquisition system so a click on the map turns into a booked visit instead of a dead end. The little tags are step one. Being the obvious, easy, trustworthy choice on the map is the goal.
Our honest take
If you do one free marketing task this month, make it this. Open your Google Business Profile, find the attributes, and fill in every one that is true. It will take less time than a coffee break, it costs nothing, and it speaks directly to the patients most likely to slip away: the ones with a specific need who are choosing between you and the practice down the street. The other place blends in. You told the patient exactly what they needed to hear. That is usually enough to earn the call.
