For a year now the whole healthcare marketing world has been asking one question: how do I get ChatGPT to recommend my practice? It is a fair question. More patients are searching this way every month, and showing up in the AI's answer is real estate worth fighting for.
But almost nobody is asking the second question, the one that actually decides whether you grow. What happens after the AI recommends you? Because here is the thing the AI will never do for you: it will not book the patient. It hands them to you, and then it is gone. Everything after that moment is your website, your phone, your front desk and your booking page. If that part is weak, all the AI visibility in the world just sends more people to a door that sticks.
The clue hiding in a retail story
Rewind to late 2025. OpenAI launched something called Instant Checkout, a way to buy products without ever leaving ChatGPT. You could ask for a pair of shoes and complete the purchase right there in the chat. Walmart put roughly 200,000 products into it. It looked like the future.
By early 2026 OpenAI shelved the in chat checkout and pivoted to an open standard focused on discovery instead, where the AI helps you find and compare, but the actual purchase finishes on the store's own website. Industry analysts at Forrester called it a notable pullback. The reported reason is the part practice owners need to hear: checkout completed inside the chat converted at roughly a third of the rate of sending those same shoppers to the retailer's own site to finish.
Read that again. Even the company building the smartest AI on the planet found that the business's own site closes the sale better than the AI does. Discovery belongs to the AI. The conversion belongs to you. That split is not a retail quirk. It is the shape of how people will find and choose a doctor from here on.
Patients already shop for doctors this way
This is not a someday trend. In rater8's 2026 Patient Choice Report, 36 percent of patients said AI tools now sway which doctor they pick, nudging ahead of Google at 34 percent and even edging out a referral from another doctor at 32 percent. The same report found 84 percent still check online reviews before they book, and most start with a plain language search like best dermatologist near me or a pediatrician who takes my insurance.
So picture the real journey. A mom opens ChatGPT at 9pm and types, who is a good pediatrician near me that takes Aetna and is good with anxious kids. The AI reads websites, reviews and profiles, and comes back with two or three names and a sentence on each. She taps the one that sounds right. And now she is on your website, or dialing your front desk, knowing almost nothing about you except that a machine vouched for you a second ago. The AI did its job. The rest is yours.
If you want the first half of that journey, getting the AI to name you at all, we wrote a full guide on how to get your practice recommended by ChatGPT, and on why ChatGPT tends to recommend hospitals instead of independent practices. This piece is about the half everyone forgets: what you do when the patient actually shows up.
The handoff is where practices bleed
Think of the AI as the best referral source you have ever had. It is tireless, it is on all night, and it answers every patient personally. But a referral only counts if the person on the other end can finish what they came to do. When a friend refers you and the patient hits a dead phone line, the referral dies. The AI is no different. It delivers a warm, ready patient to your front step, and then your front step has to do the rest.
Here is where most practices lose those patients without ever noticing:
- A slow website. The patient the AI sent has zero patience and three other names in the answer. Google has found more than half of mobile visits are abandoned if a page takes over three seconds to load. We dug into this for practices specifically in does website speed affect patient bookings, and the answer is yes, a lot.
- No obvious way to book. If the main button says Contact Us instead of Book Appointment, or the only path is a 9 to 5 phone line, that 9pm mom hits a wall and taps the next name. Online booking is not a luxury anymore, it is the catch net for everyone the AI sends after hours. We make the case in online booking for medical practices.
- Hidden insurance and pricing. The AI often recommends you partly on these, so the patient arrives expecting to see them. If your site stays silent, they assume the worst and leave to check someone who answered the question.
- A phone that goes to voicemail. Many AI referrals still finish with a call. If no one picks up live, that patient does not leave a message, they dial the next practice. Speed is everything here, which is why how fast you respond to a new patient inquiry often decides who wins them.
The one rule to tape to your monitor
Never make a patient the AI sent you work to become a patient. The machine already did the convincing. Your only job is to remove every speck of friction between that recommendation and a booked visit: fast page, clear book button, visible insurance and price, a human on the phone. Getting mentioned is marketing. Making it effortless to say yes is where the patient is actually won.
Being found and being booked are two different jobs
This is the trap we see practice owners fall into. They pour energy into the discovery side, the reviews, the content, the profile, and they do get mentioned more. Then they stare at flat new patient numbers and conclude the AI hype was oversold. It was not oversold. The patients came. They just landed on a site that made them hesitate, and hesitation at 9pm is a lost patient.
One more wrinkle makes this easy to miss. A lot of these AI referrals do not announce themselves in your analytics. The patient reads an answer in ChatGPT, then types your name into a browser or taps through, and the visit lands in your reports as plain direct traffic with no source attached. It is the same blind spot we covered in zero click search and what it means for your practice. You can be winning in AI and not see a single line in your dashboard that says so. Which is exactly why you cannot judge it by traffic labels alone, and why the smart move is to make the landing experience so smooth that every visitor converts whether you can name their source or not.
A quick story from the trenches
A dermatology practice told us this summer that they had leaned hard into getting listed in AI answers and it was working, they could see themselves show up when they tested the questions. But bookings had barely moved and they were frustrated.
We asked to see what a patient sees. Their site took about six seconds to load on a phone, the booking button was buried below three screens of scrolling, and nowhere did it say which insurance they took. The AI was doing its part beautifully. The practice was dropping every patient it sent at the welcome mat. We did nothing to their AI visibility. We made the site fast, put a book now button up top, added an insurance line and turned on real time online booking. Same traffic, far more of it turning into appointments. The discovery had been fine for months. The conversion was the hole.
How EtherealMinds helps
We work only with healthcare practices across the United States, and we treat the whole journey as one system, because splitting it is exactly how patients fall through the cracks. On the discovery side, we build the reviews, the clear content and the accurate profile that get you named when a patient asks an AI for a good doctor. But we obsess over the handoff, because that is where the money is actually made.
That means a website built to convert a cold, AI referred stranger: loads in a couple of seconds on a phone, a book button they cannot miss, insurance and starting prices right where they look, and online booking that works at 9pm when your office is dark. It means a full patient acquisition system where the discovery and the conversion are wired together instead of fighting each other. And because so many of these patients still want to call, our AI receptionist answers every call live, day or night, and books them before they drift to the next name on the AI's list.
The big platforms just told us how this works. The AI finds the customer. The business's own site closes them. For your practice that is the best news in years, because the hardest part, getting in front of a ready patient, is increasingly handled for you. The part that is left is the part you control completely. Win the handoff and the AI becomes the most reliable new patient source you have ever had.
