Here is a number that should change how you write your ads. According to LocaliQ's 2026 healthcare search benchmarks, a click on a physician ad costs about $4.76, and healthcare converts at roughly 12 percent, one of the highest rates of any industry. That combination is rare: expensive clicks and warm intent. The people typing dentist near me or ADHD testing plus your city are not browsing. They have a problem and they are ready to act.
So when a practice tells us their ads are not working, the first thing we ask is: what does the ad actually say? Nine times out of ten it is some version of quality care you can trust at our state of the art facility. That line costs you the same $4.76 as a great one, and it books almost no one. Let us fix that.
Write to the search, not about yourself
The single biggest mistake in healthcare ads is that they are about the practice. Awards, philosophy, how long the doctor trained. None of that is what the patient typed. Your ad has a fraction of a second to prove it is the answer to their exact search, and the fastest way to do that is to repeat their words back to them.
Someone searching emergency dentist open Saturday should see an ad that says exactly that: Emergency Dentist Open Saturday, not Comprehensive Dental Care for the Whole Family. The match itself is a signal. It tells the patient, and Google's quality score, that this ad belongs at the top. When the headline mirrors the search, click through rates climb and your cost per click usually drops, because Google rewards relevance.
Answer the two questions every patient has
Before anyone books, they silently ask two things: can I afford this or does my insurance cover it, and how soon can I be seen. An ad that answers both before the click does two jobs at once. It pulls in the people who are a fit, and it filters out the ones who are not, so you stop paying for clicks that were never going to book.
For insurance based care, name it. We accept most PPO plans or In network with major insurers answers the question that quietly kills more bookings than price ever does. For cash pay and elective work, a starting price or a clear offer does the filtering. Consults from $99 or Free implant consultation tells the tire kickers to keep scrolling and tells the serious patient you are upfront. This is also where showing prices connects to the rest of your funnel, something we dug into in whether a practice should show prices on its website.
Then answer the speed question. Same day appointments, New patients seen this week, Book online in 60 seconds. Availability is often the deciding factor between two similar practices, so if you can be seen sooner, say so in the ad.
Give one real reason to trust you
Patients are choosing who to let near their body. Trust is not optional, but it has to be specific to matter. Delete anything a competitor could copy word for word. Trusted, caring, experienced are filler. A number is not.
- Reviews with the count: 4.9 stars from 600 plus patients beats trusted by the community every time.
- Real specifics: Board certified dermatologists, Serving Tampa families since 2004, Spanish speaking staff.
- A concrete promise: No long waits, most patients seen within 15 minutes or Financing available, 0% for 12 months.
One believable, checkable claim does more than five vague adjectives stacked on top of each other.
Use all the space Google gives you
A modern Google ad is not one line. Responsive search ads let you load up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions, and the system tests combinations for you. Do not hand it 15 rewrites of the same idea. Feed it distinct angles: one names the service and city, one covers insurance, one covers availability, one carries a trust signal, one states the offer. Then pin the message you never want to lose, usually your city or your core service, so it always appears.
Then stack the free real estate. Sitelinks to your top services, callout snippets like Open Saturdays and Free parking, a call asset with your number, and a location asset so you show up on the map. These extras push competitors down the page and give the patient more ways to act. A practice that fills them out is often taking up twice the screen height of the one that did not, for the same click price.
A quick before and after
Here is a real pattern we see, cleaned up. A knee clinic was running this:
Headline: Premier Orthopedic Care · Dedicated to Excellence in Patient Outcomes
It read fine and did nothing. The click cost the same, and almost nobody booked. We rewrote it around the search a person in pain actually types:
Headline: Knee Pain Specialist in Austin · Seen This Week, Most Insurance Accepted · 4.9 Stars, 800+ Reviews
Same clinic, same budget. The second one names the problem, the city, the timeline, the coverage, and the proof, all before the click. That is five reasons to choose it over the ad that just called itself premier. If your ads are pulling clicks but no calls, the copy is often only half the story, and we broke down the rest in why your Google Ads get clicks but no patients.
The ad is only the first half
This is the part practice owners skip, and it is where most of the money leaks. A great ad earns the click. What happens next earns the patient, and it usually fails in one of two places.
First, the landing page. If your ad promises same day knee consults and the click dumps the patient on your generic homepage, they have to hunt for what you promised, and most will not. The page they land on should repeat the ad's promise in the first headline and put booking right there. We covered this fully in whether your practice needs a landing page, and it is exactly why we build the websites behind the ads we run, so the message never breaks between the click and the booking.
Second, the follow up. A paid click that turns into a form fill or a call is worth real money, and it goes cold fast. If a patient submits a form at 2pm and no one calls until tomorrow, they have booked elsewhere. Speed is the whole game here, which is why we pair the ads with a fast intake, whether that is a live team or our AI receptionist answering every call and text so no paid lead sits in a voicemail box. More on that in how fast you should respond to a new patient inquiry.
Our honest take
The ad copy is the cheapest thing to fix and one of the highest leverage. You are already paying premium prices for healthcare clicks, so the difference between an ad that talks about itself and one that answers the patient is not small. It is the difference between a full schedule and a media bill you resent.
Write to the search. Answer the money question and the timing question. Give one specific reason to trust you. Fill out every field Google offers. Then make sure the page and the phone hold up their end. Do that, and the same budget that felt like a waste starts booking patients, because the clicks were always warm. The words just were not.
How EtherealMinds handles this for practices
We work only with healthcare practices in the United States, and we treat the ad as one piece of a connected system rather than a standalone thing. When we run patient acquisition for a practice, we write the ad copy around the searches your patients actually make, point every click at a focused page that repeats the promise, and put a fast intake behind it so the lead never goes cold. You keep treating patients. We make sure the expensive clicks you are paying for turn into people on the schedule.
