Here is a number that should stop you for a second. In a 2026 survey of nearly 1,000 US patients, 64% of people aged 45 to 60 said they had used AI tools like ChatGPT to research a doctor. For the 18 to 29 group, it was 28%. So the age band you probably think of as least likely to trust a chatbot is more than twice as likely to use one to choose their care.
That data comes from the 2026 Patient Choice Report by rater8, a review platform for healthcare, released this year. It is worth reading, because it rewrites who your marketing is really talking to. If you have been treating AI search as a problem for the future, or for younger patients, the report says it is a problem for today, and for exactly the patients who fill your schedule.
The myth: AI search is a young person thing
It is easy to see why the myth took hold. Gen Z grew up on phones, so of course they must be the ones asking AI to book their dentist. But the survey found the usage curve runs the other way. Look at the breakdown by age.
- Ages 45 to 60: 64% have used AI to research a provider.
- Ages 30 to 44: 52%.
- Ages 18 to 29: 28%, even though most of them are aware the tools exist.
Think about who the 45 to 65 patient is. They are often managing their own care and a parent's or a spouse's. They have real conditions, real insurance questions, and real money on the line, so they do their homework. AI feels like a smart, private assistant that reads everything and hands back a short answer, which is exactly what a busy, careful adult wants. Younger patients, oddly, still lean on friends, social feeds, and a quick map search.
This is not a slow trend, it is a fast one
The report tracks the same behavior over time, and the jump is steep. Reliance on AI to help choose a provider more than doubled in about a year, from 17% to 36% of patients. Nearly half, 47%, said they had used a tool such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews to research a provider, up from 31% just nine months earlier. And among patients who switched doctors in the past year, AI was named the single biggest digital influence, at 39%, ahead of a plain Google search or a referral.
We have written before about how patients now trust AI more than referrals to pick a doctor. The new age data adds the twist that makes it urgent: the people doing this are not experimenting on the edges. They are your core patients, and there are more of them every quarter.
The scary part: AI is often wrong, and patients believe it anyway
Now the sentence from the report that every practice owner should tape to their monitor. Two thirds of patients, 66%, said they had run into incorrect provider information from an AI tool. And 60% said they trusted the AI summary without checking it themselves.
Sit with that. If an AI confidently tells a patient your practice is closed on Tuesdays when you are open, that you do not take their plan when you do, or that you are at the address you left three years ago, most of them will not call to confirm. They will simply cross you off and book the practice the AI got right. You never see the miss. There is no bounced call, no abandoned form, no angry email. The patient just goes somewhere else, sure they made a smart choice, working off bad information about you.
Why does AI get practices wrong so often?
Because it stitches its answer from whatever it can find: your website, your Google Business Profile, old directory pages, review sites, and cached listings. When those sources disagree, and for most practices they do, the AI guesses. Old hours on a directory, a wrong phone number on a health site, a service you dropped years ago. Every stale detail out there is something an AI can repeat as fact to a patient who trusts it completely.
What this changes about your marketing
The old game was ranking on the first page of Google and hoping the patient clicked you. The new game runs one step earlier: being the practice the AI reads correctly and recommends in the first place. That is often called generative engine optimization, but the plain version is simpler. Be the clearest, most consistent, best reviewed answer to the question the patient is asking. Here is where practices win or lose it.
- Say the same thing everywhere. Your name, address, phone, hours, services, and accepted insurance should match exactly across your website, your Google Business Profile, and every directory. AI cross checks these. When they agree, it trusts you. When they clash, it may drop you or repeat the wrong one.
- Answer real questions in plain words. AI pulls clear, factual sentences. Pages that directly answer what patients ask, what you treat, what it costs, whether you take their plan, get quoted. Vague brochure copy does not.
- Keep reviews fresh and strong. The same report found 55% of patients have walked away from a doctor over reviews, up from 40% a year earlier, and 75% will not book below 4.0 stars. AI summarizes those reviews when it recommends you, so a thin or low profile costs you twice.
- Be easy to book once the AI hands them over. Getting recommended is step one. If the patient then lands on a slow site or a phone only booking, you lose them at the finish line.
None of this is exotic. It is the same local search and reputation work that has always mattered, done with more care, because now a machine reads your details out loud to a patient who will not fact check it. If you want the deeper version of this, it is the heart of what we do in healthcare SEO and AI search.
A five minute test you can run today
Open ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews and ask, as a patient would, for the best practice in your specialty and city. Do you show up? Is your name spelled right, your address current, your hours and insurance correct? Now do it for a competitor. Whatever the AI says about you is what a growing share of your best patients are hearing before they ever reach your website. If it is wrong, that is money leaving without a trace, every week.
Do not stop marketing to the humans
One caution, because the pendulum always swings too far. This does not mean chase AI and forget everything else. Plenty of patients still find you the old ways: a map search, a friend's recommendation, a social post, a drive past your sign. The 45 to 60 patient who uses AI also reads your reviews, checks your website, and often still wants to talk to a person before committing. AI is one more front door, not the only one.
So the smart move is to make every front door open cleanly. A patient acquisition system that shows up in local search, in AI answers, on social, and on your own site, all saying the same true thing, all leading to an easy booking. That is the whole idea behind our patient acquisition system, and it is why we obsess over the details AI now checks on your behalf.
Where EtherealMinds fits in
This is the work we do every day for healthcare practices across the US. We clean up the details AI reads, your listings, your hours, your services, so they match everywhere and the AI repeats the right answer. We build websites that convert and rank, written in the clear, factual way both patients and AI reward, and fast to book on. And we help you earn the steady, genuine reviews that decide whether the AI, and the person, choose you. The goal is simple: when a 55 year old asks their phone for a good doctor in your town, the answer is you, spelled right, with the correct details, and a booking they can finish in under a minute.
Our honest take
Do not panic, and do not buy some shiny AI gadget off the back of this. The report is not telling you to reinvent your practice. It is telling you something calmer and more useful: the patients you most want are already asking AI about you, they skew older than you think, and if the AI has your facts wrong, most of them will believe it and leave without a word. The practices that win the next couple of years will not be the ones shouting about AI. They will be the ones boring enough to keep every detail accurate everywhere, with real reviews and an easy booking, so that whoever, or whatever, is doing the recommending gets it right. That is unglamorous work. It is also exactly the work that fills a schedule.
