A patient we will call Dana needed a new dermatologist last spring. She did not ask her sister, and she did not scroll a map. She opened ChatGPT and typed a plain question: who is a good dermatologist near me that treats adult acne and takes my insurance. Thirty seconds later she had three names, a short reason for each, and a favorite. She called that one. The other two practices never knew they were in the running, and never knew they lost.
That little scene is not an edge case anymore. It just became the mainstream way a real slice of patients pick a doctor, and there is fresh data to prove it. If you still think of Google and referrals as the two front doors to your practice, there is now a third door, and for a growing group of people it is the first one they walk through.
The headline from the new report
On June 3, 2026, the reputation firm rater8 published its 2026 Patient Choice Report, a survey of nearly 1,000 adult patients across the United States. The finding that stopped us cold: among people who actively searched for a new doctor, AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude were the single biggest digital influence on their choice.
Not one of the top influences. The top one. Here is the order.
Read that middle number again. AI use for choosing a doctor roughly doubled in a single year, from 17 percent to 36 percent. It did not creep. It leapt. And it leapt right past the two channels every practice has leaned on for decades. Among patients who actually switched doctors, AI was the top digital influence for 39 percent of them. These are not window shoppers. They changed who they trust with their health, and an AI helped them do it.
One more myth to bury: this is not a young person thing. In the same report, the heaviest AI users were adults age 45 to 60, at 64 percent. That is the exact group booking knees, colonoscopies, skin checks, and their kids' appointments. Your bread and butter patients are the ones leaning on AI the hardest.
Reviews did not go away. They got more powerful.
Here is the part practice owners tend to miss. AI did not replace reviews. It supercharged them. Your reviews now do double duty: a human reads them, and the AI reads them too when it decides whether to put your name in front of that human.
The same report is blunt about how much reviews decide. More than half of patients, 55 percent, said they walked away from a doctor because of online reviews, up 15 points from the year before. Three in four, 75 percent, said they would not book a provider rated below 4.0 stars. And 66 percent said the way a practice responds to reviews directly shapes whether they trust it.
So the doctor with a 3.8 rating and a wall of ignored complaints is not just losing the patients who read reviews. That practice is also feeding a weak signal to the AI, which then quietly leaves it off the shortlist. If you want the ground level playbook, we covered how to get more Google reviews and why patients read your review replies more closely than most owners think. Both of those pages matter twice as much now that a machine is reading over the patient's shoulder.
How AI actually picks who to name
Let me clear up the biggest misconception. An AI tool does not have a hidden opinion of your practice sitting in a vault somewhere. When a patient asks for a good doctor nearby, the AI builds an answer on the spot from whatever it can read about the practices in that area. That means it is pulling from a familiar set of sources:
What AI reads before it recommends you
Your Google Business Profile. Category, hours, address, services, insurance, photos, and the reviews attached to it. A complete Google Business Profile is the single richest source AI has on a local practice. Your reviews and star rating. Both the score and what people actually wrote. Your website. Clear pages that spell out what you treat, where, for whom, and at what cost feed the AI clean facts. Vague or missing pages leave it guessing. The rest of the web. Directories, listings, and any coverage of your practice, and whether they all agree with each other.
Notice that none of this is a trick, and all of it is the same work as strong local search. Getting recommended by AI is not a separate game from ranking on Google. It is the same fundamentals, read by a new kind of reader. That is exactly why we started treating AI search as core to healthcare SEO rather than a side project, and why we wrote a fuller guide on SEO, GEO, and AI search for healthcare in 2026. The practices that show up in AI answers are almost always the ones that already did the boring, honest work of being complete and consistent everywhere.
There is a flip side worth naming. Big hospital systems have huge, tidy web footprints, so AI tends to reach for them first. We dug into why in why ChatGPT recommends hospitals, not your practice. The short version: an independent practice can absolutely win these answers, but only if its own house is in order first.
Try this today: ask the AI about yourself
You do not need a report to see where you stand. You need five minutes and your own phone. Open ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, or Perplexity and search the way a nervous patient would, then read the answer like you are the patient, not the owner.
1. Search the way a patient does
Type something real: best pediatric dentist in [your city], or a chiropractor near [your area] that takes [insurance]. See if you show up at all in the answer. If your competitors get named and you do not, that is the whole ballgame, right there on your screen.
2. Then ask about you by name
Ask the AI directly: tell me about [your practice name] in [your city]. Read what it says out loud. Is it accurate? Are the hours, the phone, the services, and the insurance right? Is the tone something you would want a first time patient to hear?
3. Write down every wrong thing
Old address. Hours you changed two years ago. A service you dropped, or one you added that it never mentions. Each error is a patient sent to the wrong place or told the wrong thing. And here is the scary part from the data: 66 percent of patients said they had seen incorrect provider information from AI, but plenty of them trusted it anyway without checking. Wrong information does not just sit there quietly. It costs you the visit.
Every problem you find on this little tour traces back to something you control: your profile, your reviews, your website, and whether your facts match everywhere online. The AI is not the villain. It is a mirror pointed at your web presence, and it will read back exactly what it finds.
Our honest take
We are not going to tell you to panic about robots taking over healthcare. That is not the story here. The story is calmer and more useful: the front door to your practice moved, and a lot of owners have not looked up to notice. For years the game was rank on Google and collect referrals. That game still counts. It just is not the whole board anymore.
The good news is that there is no separate AI trick to buy, and anyone selling you one is selling smoke. What earns an AI recommendation is the same thing that earns a patient's trust: be real, be complete, be everywhere your patients look, and be consistent about the facts. Get your Google Business Profile airtight. Keep real reviews coming and answer them like a human. Make your website say clearly what you do and for whom. Do that, and you show up for the patient reading, the search engine ranking, and the AI summarizing, all at once. Skip it, and you slowly go invisible in the one place a growing share of patients now start.
How EtherealMinds helps
This is the work we do every day, and it is why we fold AI search into everything instead of treating it as a novelty. When we build a website for a practice, we write it so both a patient and an AI can understand in seconds what you treat, where, for whom, and why you are worth a call. Our healthcare SEO keeps your profile complete, your listings consistent across the web, and a steady stream of genuine reviews flowing in, which is precisely the raw material AI pulls from when it decides who to name. And because so many of these patients reach out after hours, our AI receptionist makes sure the ones who do find you actually get answered and booked, instead of hitting voicemail and moving to the next name on the AI's list.
We watch this landscape so you can keep running your practice. If you want to see what AI is telling patients about you today, and what it would take to be the name it recommends, we are glad to take a look with you.
