Last winter a dermatology office called us the week after New Year, upset that their phones had gone silent over the holidays. They had actually been open the whole first week of January, ready for patients. The problem was their Google listing. It still had holiday hours from two weeks earlier and, worse, Google had flipped their status to temporarily closed on its own. So for six days, every patient who searched their name saw a gray closed and moved on. They were open, staffed, and paying rent, and Google was telling the whole neighborhood they were shut.
This is one of the sneakiest, cheapest, most fixable ways a practice loses patients, and almost nobody checks for it. Your ads can be perfect, your reviews glowing, your website beautiful, and one wrong dropdown on Google can undo all of it in the last three seconds before a patient books. Let me show you how much it costs and exactly how to fix it.
Why hours matter more than owners think
Think about how a patient actually finds you now. They do not carry your business card. They pull out their phone and type something like urgent care near me, or dentist open now, or your practice name to grab the address. In that moment, three lines decide everything: your name, your reviews, and whether you are open. Hours are not a detail. They are one of the first things a patient checks before they lift a finger to call.
The search behavior backs this up. According to BrightLocal, 46 percent of consumers say they always or often add near me to their local searches, and 73 percent of local searches now start on a mobile device. People are searching on the couch, in the car, in a parking lot, and they want to know one thing: can I go there right now. Google has built its whole local experience around that, which is why open now is a filter people tap and why your hours sit right at the top of your profile.
So when the hours are wrong, you are not losing a distant maybe. You are losing a patient who had their thumb over the call button. That is the most expensive kind of patient to lose, because they were the easiest to win.
What wrong hours actually cost
Here is the part that stings. The patient who sees you are closed does not call back later to check. They do not email to confirm. They scroll to the next result and book there. You never see the miss in any report, which is exactly why it goes unfixed for months.
- Roughly a quarter to a third of would be callers walk away. Local marketing analyses estimate that incorrect hours turn away 25 to 30 percent of people who would have called, because they assume you are closed. One breakdown of the problem is here. For a busy practice, that is real patients every single week.
- It is more common than you would guess. An analysis of 230 local businesses by DreamHost found 53 percent had information on Google that did not match their own website. Hours are one of the first things to drift out of sync.
- Complete, correct profiles win more visits. Google has said patients are 70 percent more likely to visit and 50 percent more likely to consider a business with a complete Business Profile. Wrong hours are the opposite of complete. They actively push people away.
None of this shows up as a line item. There is no bill for the patient you lost to a stale holiday hour. That is what makes it dangerous. It feels like nothing is wrong, right up until you notice a slow week you cannot explain.
Where wrong hours hide
Most owners set their hours once when they claim the listing and never look again. Meanwhile, the hours drift. Here is where the damage usually comes from.
The five most common ways your hours go wrong
1. Holiday hours nobody set. Google flags most major US holidays. If you leave it blank, your regular hours show, and a patient shows up to a locked door, or Google guesses and marks you closed when you are open. 2. Temporarily closed you never chose. Google can auto apply this based on activity signals, and it is brutal. It buries you in the map results. 3. Old directory listings. Yelp, Healthgrades, an old Facebook page, all feeding Google conflicting hours from years ago. 4. A schedule change you forgot to post. You started closing at 4 on Fridays, or added Saturday mornings, and Google still says otherwise. 5. Public suggested edits. Google lets anyone suggest a change to your hours. If you are not watching your profile, those can go live.
Notice that most of these are not your fault. Google and the wider web change your listing on their own. That is the real lesson here: a Google Business Profile is not set and forget. It is a living listing that needs a set of eyes on it, the same way you would not leave your front door unlocked and assume it stays that way. We covered the bigger picture of keeping every listing in sync in whether your practice info matches everywhere online, and hours are the piece that changes most often.
How to fix your hours the right way
The fix is not complicated, but it has to be done deliberately, not once a year. Here is the checklist we run for practices.
Set the real weekly hours, then double check them live
Open your Google Business Profile, go to the hours section, and set your actual open hours for each day. Then do the step almost everyone skips: open a private or incognito window and search your practice as a patient would. Your own account sees a friendlier version, so you have to look the way a stranger looks. Confirm the hours, and confirm you are not marked temporarily closed.
Add special hours for every holiday, weeks ahead
Do not wait for the morning of Labor Day or the day before Thanksgiving. Sit down once and enter special hours for every holiday on the calendar, plus any half days and closures you already know about. This is the single biggest source of lost patients we see, and it takes fifteen minutes to prevent for the whole year.
Match your hours everywhere, not just on Google
Your website, your Google profile, your Yelp page, and your Facebook page should all say the exact same thing. When they disagree, Google is not sure which to trust, and your ranking in the local map can slip too. Consistency here helps both your patients and your visibility, which is part of why it shows up in every guide on ranking in the Google map pack.
Put a real person or system on the after hours demand
Correct hours solve the times you are open and look closed. But a lot of patients search and call precisely when you are closed, at night and on weekends, because that is when they finally have a minute. Accurate hours will not capture those. Online booking that works at midnight will, and so will a front desk that answers instead of a voicemail. We wrote about the size of that leak in how practices lose patients after hours, and about the lunch hour version of it in missing calls at lunch.
Our take: this is the cheapest patient you will ever save
We spend a lot of our days building ads, websites, and content that cost real money to run. Fixing your Google hours costs nothing but fifteen minutes and the habit of checking. Yet it can save you more patients in a month than a new ad campaign brings in, because it stops you from throwing away the patients who already found you and already wanted to come. That is the definition of a good deal.
Here is the honest way to think about it. You can pour money into getting a stranger to search for you. But the second they see closed when you are open, all that money evaporates in three seconds. Marketing gets people to the door. Wrong hours lock it. Get the basics right first, then the ads and the SEO you pay for actually pay off, instead of leaking out the bottom.
How EtherealMinds keeps your listing working for you
When we manage local SEO for a practice, your Google Business Profile is not a one time setup. We keep the hours accurate, load the holidays ahead of time, watch for suggested edits and the dreaded temporarily closed flag, and keep your name, address, and hours identical across every directory that feeds Google. Then we pair it with the rest of the patient acquisition system, so a patient who searches at noon or at midnight can always book, and an AI receptionist answers the calls that land after you have gone home. Correct hours keep you from looking closed. The rest keeps you from ever missing the patient who was ready to say yes.
So, are wrong hours on Google costing you patients? Almost certainly a few, and you would never know it from any report. Go search your own practice in an incognito window right now, on your phone, the way a patient would. If the hours are off, or it says temporarily closed, you just found free patients hiding in plain sight. Fix it today, then set a reminder to look again next month.
